Lindisfarne 2006

10th century prayer book

Reproduction of an early 10th century prayer book, written in Latin. Although not as elaborately decorated as the famous Lindisfarne Bible or the Book of Kells, books like this were still extremely precious as it took many calf skins to make the parchment on which they were written. This manuscript took a hundred and fifty hours for the scribe to copy the text by hand, before it could be bound between leather-covered oak boards to protect it. Rubrics (in red) give section headings, while decorated initial letters mark the start of each prayer.
