Battle of Hastings
Battle Abbey, Battle, West Sussex
Join us at Battle Abbey for one of our biggest shows of the year: The 950th anniversary of the battle of Hastings where Harold lost the English crown to the Norman invaders. See the crafts, the people and the warfare of 1066 come to life with enthusiastic recreation of one of the most famous days in English history.
There is a very busy and large encampment showing crafts, cooking, battle preparations, and 11th Century life.
All happening on the very lands where Harold stood with his English army facing the best the Normans, and the Pope could muster. You might know the result, but the drama of our recreation might have you hoping that the English rule will prevail …
Sat 24 - Sun 25 Sep 2016
Stamford Bridge, North Yorkshire
It is late in the year 1066 and Harold Hardrada has invaded the north of England with a Norwegian army. Contrary to the express instructions of King Harald Godwinson the Northern Earls have opposed Hardrada and subsequently lost the Battle of Fulford Gate on the outskirts of York.
The Norwegians are now awaiting the aldermen of York to deliver tribute and hostages to them to avoid them sacking the town. They wait at a narrow bridge over the river Derwent, however, unbeknown to the invaders Harald Godwinson has force marched his army from the south of England and they go to meet the Vikings at the bridge instead of the towns officials.
What happens next helps seal the fate of the English throne and who sits on it.
