Run & Fell
Instructions for run and fell seams
Run and fell seams are still used today for jeans, tents, and other clothing where a strong, hard-wearing seam is needed. Several variations exist and existed during the Viking age. This version is based on archaeological evidence from York and Oslo.

Begin by sewing a straight seam.

Open the work out, and press the seam to one side.

If the seam is on a raw edge, trim the inside edge of the seam to reduce bulk, then turn under the outside edge and stitch it down, either by machine or by hand, as shown.

If the seam is on a selvedge (finished edge of the fabric), it can be stitched straight down, either by machine or by hand as shown.
